Three-faced sailor attacked by bird

A sculpture John and I saw in North Berwick recently.Unfortuntately it is situated at a junction leading to a residential area, so no matter what angle I shot from, there was always some kind of clutter in the background, whether it was houses, power lines, or the road.

Oh no! He has many faces. I thought the title was just funny; no, it's literal.

What's its significance?

Clutter or not, it is a great statue. How cool! :)

I actually don't know the significance. I couldn't see a plaque anywhere and I don't remember there even being a name plate. So I made one up. As one does.

Oh! I can just see him in action .... birds dive-bombing and he can't let go of the ores! In desperation he shakes his head from left to right to displace the screeching attacker and if you look hard enough you can see the mood in his faces: distressed, anxious and frantic.

The statue has a raw power and a mystery, why the three faces? Why is the bird attacking? Why was the statue erected there?

Interesting stuff.

Maybe it represents a deity from the ancient Hindu-Gaelic tradition. And if you run around it really really fast you get that photo effect like the 360 shots in "The Matrix"!

A man of many faces!

I wonder if that statue is an artistic lesson about the dangers of being three-faced... be true to your self or have your brains eaten by a giant raven! CAWful!

What an interesting place you live! What took you there? (I have Scottish blood but have never been there.)

What a fabulous sculpture! I can imagine it has an interesting story behind it. I love the treasures you find while you're on your travels.

It is so interesting! I'm not sure he knows the bird is up there..he seems to be turning his head quickly, looking for something, for IT. Neat the way the faces share the eyes! Cool.
